S10:E11 - “Bimini Race Against The Shark” (2018)
Steve and Scott invite Kyle Shea to fish with them to try to land tuna fast and beat the sharks
Located 50 miles off the coast of Florida, on the Bahamian island Bimini, the guys discuss the difficulty of catching tuna with a high population of sharks. Steve recommends having at least three people aboard the boat to have a higher chance of catching the yellowfin tuna. The men travel about 50 miles offshore, and Scott is quick to catch a dolphin as their first catch of the day.
At an instant, sharks race up to the boat and start nipping at the bait on the lines. Known as silky sharks or blackspot sharks, these sharks are most commonly found in the same areas as tuna, and usually live in wide, open waters. As a bonus for these sharks, they have a keen sense of awareness for nearby fishing boats and will gravitate towards them, knowing there’s a high chance of grabbing some fish meat being thrown off the boats.
At every chance given, the sharks take the meat before the tuna can get a chance, leaving the men with less bait, less willing tuna, and more hungry sharks. The tuna, of course, don’t want to be near the sharks, so Steve throws extra meaty chunks of bait to lure them back in. After a few nips, but no catches of tuna, the guys call it a day and head back to the island.
As always, we had Jason Stemple with us to document this trip in ultra high quality still photos. Here are some of my favorites. Enjoy!
